And because they’ve never done a project before, then they they’re saying no to the dream project basically, which could have been the the project that, you know, skyro skyrockets their career.

And people forget this because it’s it’s linked with how much we need to earn and how much we want to earn because by the time we’re starting a business, we’re actually thinking, well, we need money to make this you know, to keep on going and not, you know, just do whatever we want every day, but we actually need to be having a profitable business. So pricing and h so how much we need to earn and what we’re selling needs to make sense and we need to work this out.

That only happens once you’re running full service projects because there are so many variables and the price doesn’t really matter as much as it does for all of the other services and all of the other client types out there because 99% of clients care about the money. there’s 1% and that’s the super luxury who don’t care but they’ll still you know be a bit fussy about certain things but ultimately pricing per project doesn’t work in that way. So you might get your first client and actually most people do get their first client through someone they know.

So if you need help with that, that is what I do. there are two different types of marketing. There’s uh face toface and then there’s passive. So I would say social or online. So you need both. And uh again a lot of people will try and become an interior designer just by posting on Instagram.
That works for a very select few amount of people who already have a huge portfolio who have an excellent portfolio or a very strong design style or like uh are just natural influencers who enjoy social media. But the vast majority of interior designers firstly who are starting out don’t have a portfolio and don’t have that large following. So social media alone is not going to to bring in clients.
So you need to get yourself in front of the right clients who are going to pay for the services that you are offering because interior designers offer different services. So things like face tof face marketing, things like networking, regular workshops, even public speaking. Other things are so the the kind of online stuff, so passive marketing is Instagram like things like LinkedIn and social media and writing a blog, things like that. So using your website, so things that you’re not actively reaching out to people. So you need both active and passive.
Community
I think this is the biggest one that gets overlooked. You need a professional community, not just Instagram or Facebook chats. You need a professional community who can give you professional advice. The amount of bad advice I see on, you know, forums and like Instagram posts on, you know, people who say that they’re interior designers, but they’re they’re some of their things are questionable in terms of their advice. And you want to be learning from the beginning from someone reputable who’s also doing the right thing by the industry also right thing by you right thing in terms of the law so and a lot of designers don’t even realize they’re doing things wrong so this is why you want to be part of a professional community.
